SPRINGFIELD – State Representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) has been named chairperson of the Illinois House Veterans Affairs Committee for the 104th General Assembly, marking a significant milestone in his dedication to supporting veterans.

“Supporting our veterans is a non-partisan issue,” Swanson said. “It is an honor to lead this committee in the new General Assembly. I am appreciative to Speaker Welch, the Republicans and Democrats who serve on the committee, and all those who have made improving services and public policy for our veterans a priority. I look forward to getting to work in this spring session.”

While committee chair roles are traditionally reserved for members of the majority party, the Veterans Affairs Committee has a history of bipartisan leadership, with Republican chairpersons serving from 1999 to 2013. Swanson brings years of experience and a deep commitment to this role, having served as a member of the committee since taking office in 2017 and rising to Republican Spokesperson in 2021.

Swanson’s impressive military background further underscores his suitability for the position. Enlisting in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1977, Swanson served on active duty before earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1986. Over a distinguished 20-year career, he received the Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge for his service, including deployments to Iraq and assignments at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Since retiring from the Army in 2013, Swanson has continued his dedication to veterans as superintendent of the Henry County Veterans Assistance Commission. His leadership has provided essential services, including financial aid, transportation to VA hospitals, and emergency assistance for food, rent, and utilities for veterans in need.
