Week 2: Princeton Outlasts Rockridge, MERCO Rallies Past Sherrard, Monmouth-Roseville Overpowers Orion

3A No. 3 Princeton (2-0) defeated 2A No. 3 Rockridge (1-1) 27-18 in Edgington Friday.

The Rockets struck early, scoring with 11:05 left in the first quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Cullen Schwigen to Owen Steele to take a 6-0 lead.  Princeton responded with 21 unanswered points before Rockridge scored back-to-back touchdowns to close the first half. The Tigers led 21-18 at halftime. Rockridge was 0-3 on PAT attempts. Princeton kicked two field goals in the second half.

Casey Etheridge carried the ball 10 times for 106 yards and one TD for Princeton. Ace Christansen rushed for 75 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. For Rockridge, Schwigen went 20-30 passing for 292 yards with three TDs and two interceptions.

Mercer County (1-1) erased an early 14-0 deficit to beat Sherrard (0-2) 34-14 at George Pratt Memorial Field Friday.

The Tigers scored twice in the first quarter on touchdown passes from Carter Brown to Zach Knox and Harrison Curry. The Golden Eagles would go on to score the final 34 points of the game across the second, third and fourth quarters. Mason Gray ran for two scores, John Baldwin connected with Dakota Coppola for a pair of TDs and Daylen Blaser returned an interception for a TD in the win. Gray finished with 151 yards on 26 carries.

3A No. 10 Monmouth-Roseville (2-0) downed Orion (1-1) 60-26 at Charger Field Friday.

The Titans led 53-12 at halftime and outscored Orion 38-6 in the second quarter, the second straight week Monmouth-Roseville has put up 38 points in a single quarter. Payton Thompson rushed for 222 yards and four TDs on just eight carries to lead the Titans. Monmouth-Roseville racked up 433 total rushing yards on 29 attempts in the game.
