Week 1: Golden Eagles, Rockets, & Tigers Come Up Short; Chargers Beat Hall

Mercer County (0-1) opened the 2023 high school football season with a 14-6 loss to United (1-0) at George Pratt Memorial Field Friday night. Both Red Storm touchdowns came after Golden Eagle fumbles. Mercer County turned the ball over three times in the loss. United led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. The score remained 8-6 until United scored with 5:12 left in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 14-6.Mercer County is at St. Bede next week.

Rockridge (0-1) dropped their season opener at home to Newman Central Catholic (1-0), 12-7 Friday. The Comets scored in the first minute of the game on an interception returned for a touchdown and in the final minute of the game to come back from down 7-6 to win. The Rockets are at Ridgeview-Lexington next week.

Sherrard (0-1) fell to Kewanee (1-0) at home 28-21. The Tigers led 7-6 in the second quarter. The Boilermakers responded with a touchdown retake the lead, 14-7. Kewanee led the rest of the game. Sherrard is at Newman Central Catholic next week.

Orion (1-0) got off on the right foot, defeating Hall (0-1), 20-14 Friday. The Chargers trailed, 14-13, entering the fourth quarter but were able to rally for the victory. Orion is at Mendota next week.
