No action will be taken on Orion High School football coach Chip Filler’s status in the role at a special Board of Education meeting in the school district Wednesday.
Last week, multiple parents of students at the high school, none of whom have kids who play football, spoke at the Orion School District’s August school board meeting, asking the board to dismiss Filler, who is also a paraprofessional at the high school.
A mother and father discussed an incident between their son and Filler in May, where Filler is alleged to have told their son, “It’s because of people like you, things get stolen,” when he was in a locker room when he wasn’t supposed to be. The son’s mother told the board she is half-Mexican and found the phrase “people like you” concerning.
Another parent spoke and claimed Filler grabbed her son’s arm last school year while telling the student he needed to apologize for disrespect shown to a custodian at the school. She told the school board she filed a police report at the time, but didn’t press charges.
The only item on Wednesday’s special meeting is for the board to go into executive session.
Filler is entering his 17th season as Orion’s high school football coach. He holds the school record for career wins with a 94-65 record.
The Chargers open the season at home against Hall on Friday. Filler will be serving as the head coach in the game.
