A local Republican congresswoman is criticizing teachers’ unions and the National Education Association (NEA), while supporting legislation against them.
U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Illinois), whose congressional district includes the entire Mercer County School District, has used social media over the past week to blast the NEA.
This comes as the Mercer County Education Association (MCEA) continues negotiations with the Mercer County School District for a new contract. MCEA is part of the Illinois Education Association, which is under the umbrella of the NEA.
On Tuesday, Miller posted on X, “It’s time to dismantle the corrupt teachers’ unions that are failing our kids and poisoning their minds with woke propaganda.”
On Wednesday, she announced that she was co-sponsoring the National Education Association Charter Repeal Act, which aims to strip the NEA of its status as a federally chartered organization, claiming that the nation’s largest teachers’ union has a radical agenda.
Miller also wrote on X, “The NEA is a radical, anti-American group that has declared war on parents and children.”
Miller has represented Illinois’ 15th District in Congress since 2021.
