For Lisa Mucciolo, a trip from Yukon, Oklahoma, to the Rock Island County Fair is more than just a summer visit—it’s a homecoming. Born and raised in the former town of Green Rock, Illinois, Lisa returned to the fairgrounds this year to reconnect with family and soak in the sights, sounds, and spirit of a fair she’s known her whole life.
“Green Rock doesn’t exist anymore—it’s all Colona now,” she said with a smile. “But I grew up going to (the) farm and being around animals. I didn’t show livestock myself, but I’ve always been an animal lover.”
Lisa’s grandson got a taste of fair life this year, helping walk an animal in the ring. And for Lisa, watching the next generation experience something she holds dear was a full-circle moment. “I’m a little envious of the kids today. I always loved animals, but we didn’t live on a farm growing up.”
Though she now calls Oklahoma home, Lisa says the county fair experience is universal. “It’s the same feeling—you come for the animals, the food, the people. It’s just enjoyable. Talk to folks, ride the rides, take it all in.”
Her advice to anyone who’s never been to the Rock Island County Fair? “Come out. You’ll love it.”
