Lou Ann Smith passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, surrounded by the comfort and familiarity of the place she called home. Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved her, her family finds peace in knowing she has been reunited with the loved ones she missed so dearly and has been welcomed home with open arms. A private graveside service will be held at the Mannon Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. In keeping with Lou Ann’s love for fishing and the river, a portion of memorials will be donated to the Keithsburg Boat Club in her memory. Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo will be assisting the family with final arrangements.
Lou Ann Smith was born on September 24, 1953, in Aledo, Illinois, the daughter of Edward and Marjorie (Diehl) Smith.
Lou Ann had a passion for nurturing both plants and animals, finding particular joy in caring for her Hoya plants. She adored her cats and chickens, which brought her endless happiness. In true Lou Ann fashion, her love for animals extended even to her two pet tarantulas —proof that there was hardly a creature she couldn’t find a place for in her heart. Above all, she valued the time spent with her family, creating memories filled with love and laughter. She will be fondly remembered for her radiant smile, contagious laugh, and caring heart. The love she shared and the happiness she brought to others will remain in the hearts of those who knew her forever.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Brandon (Teri) Ziegenhorn of Joy and Marcie Terrill of New Boston; grandchildren, Tyler (Caitryn) Ziegenhorn, Hannah Terrill, Evan Terrill, Brooke Ziegenhorn, and Ellie Kernan; great grandchildren, Dawson and Andrew Ziegenhorn; siblings, Jeff and Eric Smith; and her significant other Ron “Buck” Zimmerman of New Boston, who she spent the past 10 years of her life with.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
