Walsh Gets 14-Years In Prison For Running Over Mercer County Deputy

A Sherrard man has been sentenced to 14-years in prison for running over a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy. The sentence handed down today in Mercer County Circuit Court to 29 year old Jesse Walsh. He pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony of aggravated battery to a peace officer. Walsh was charged following an incident on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving where Deputy Dennis Sabel was struck by Walsh’s vehicle near Sherrard. Both Mercer County and Rock Island County officers were involved in the pursuit of Walsh after attempting a traffic stop. He fled on foot after crashing his vehicle and was arrested a day later by Moline police. Sabel was taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City after the incident, but is now recovering from his injuries at home.
