Richard D. Norton, 89 of Aledo, died Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at Seminary Manor, Galesburg, Illinois. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 17, at Aledo Cemetery. Richard Dale Norton was born on November 15, 1934, in rural Trenton, Iowa, to Floyd and Gladys (Bain) Norton. He was a member of the United States Army Reserves. Dick and Beverly Engwall were married on February 7, 1954, in Aledo. She preceded him in death on October 31, 2020.
Dick was employed with Contel Telephone for many years. After retiring from Contel, he became the Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Aledo and also proudly implemented the 911 system for Mercer County. In Dick’s spare time, he enjoyed golfing and cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a dedicated member of the Aledo Exchange Club, Aledo Masonic Lodge, and the Aledo United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed helping in the Church’s food pantry. He was also a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneers Association and the Contel Club.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Lisa Norton of Galesburg and Scott and Ruth Norton of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Zachary, Trevor, Lacey, Mikhaila, and Breanne; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dortha Landrum of Danville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Harold, Max, and Rex Norton; and a granddaughter-in-law, Amanda.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Liberty Village in Geneseo, Seminary Manor in Galesburg, and OSF Hospice for the outstanding care provided to Dick.
