Preemption Man’s Weapons Case Continued To September

A 402-conference convened for a Preemption man charged in a Mercer County weapons investigation. The conference was held today in Mercer County Circuit Court for 29 year old Alex Cady and serves as a closed-door meeting with the defense, state and judge to discuss a possible agreement in the case. He faces a Class X felony of armed violence, Class 2 felony of possession of a stolen firearm, and two Class 3 felonies of felon in possession of a weapon stemming from a June 12th incident in the Viola area. A pre-trial conference is now scheduled for September 4th.
A co-defendant in the case, 28 year old Donovan Smith of Sherrard is charged federally with two counts of unlawful transport of firearms. He was shot by a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy during the investigation and the shooting has since been ruled justified.  Smith will appear in federal court on September 19th. Both men remain in custody.
