Mercer County Senior Center Could Close As State Payments Slow

The Mercer County Senior Center could close at the end of the month if they do not receive money owned to them by the State of Illinois.

Senior Center Director Kim Schaefer tells WRMJ the state has only sent one partial payment since June. The center is supposed to receive monthly checks from the State of Illinois.

Schaefer says the issue is critical. She is urging the public to reach out to local representatives and send money to the senior center if they can.

The state blames the delays on the State Fiscal Year Rollover. They have told Schaefer the payments are still processing.

If the Mercer County Senior Center closes at the end of the month it will affect over 4,400 seniors.
