Mercer County Public Defender Dalton Becomes Judge

Mercer County Public Defender Dan Dalton has been appointed to the bench. The Fourteenth Judicial Circuit judges voted to select Dalton as an associate judge. Because of his move to the bench that has resulted in the appointment of an interim Public Defender involving several Mercer County criminal cases–including 34 year old Antonio Cortez Williamson. The Davenport man was arrested last August and faces three Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. The case involves one child under the age of 13, according to Mercer County State’s Attorney Meeghan Lee. The matter was investigated by the New Boston Police Department with assistance from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department. Williamson’s case has been continued to March 2nd. He remains in the Mercer County Jail on $250,000 bond.
An interim Public Defender will also be appointed for a rural Aledo man charged with a Class X felony of aggravated battery to a child. 31 year old Robert Gates remains in the Mercer County Jail without bond. The victim in the case is approximately three years old, according to the complaint which was investigated by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The alleged incident occurred January 2nd. Gates pre-trial has been continued to February 24th.
