Their work extends to various fundraising initiatives throughout the year, including selling pork chops at the Mercer Market and participating in the Homecoming Parade.
A key initiative for Fur-Ever Friends is their low-cost spay and neuter clinic, held once a month at Dr. Yerkey’s in Viola. This program is crucial in addressing pet overpopulation. The group also provides transportation for animals and donates to rescue organizations that rely on donations.
Beyond shelter support, Fur-Ever Friends assists residents at Vashti Village, recognizing that, for many, their animal is their only companion. They help with basic vaccinations and food for pets whose owners might struggle with these costs. “We do a lot. It’s for us all about the animals,” Cummings emphasized.
While their current event is a major fundraiser, the organization holds several others annually, including a hot dog chili cookout at the Aledo Methodist Church. However, a significant concern for the group is the need for new volunteers. “We need some younger people because we’re getting older,” Cummings stated, underscoring the importance of fresh energy to continue their work.
Cummings stressed the importance of spaying and neutering pets to combat the overwhelming number of animals needing homes. She noted the difficulty in finding rescues that are not at full capacity, even with her extensive connections, including volunteering for Illinois Doberman Rescue.

Cummings advised potential adopters to be patient and understanding, as animals may have issues that require time and love to overcome. “You have to give it time. You’ve got to have patience. You don’t know what issues they might have,” she explained.
