Illinois residents can expect higher electric bills after the Illinois Commerce Commission approved new grid plans from two utilities but reduced both spending plans. The ICC reduced ComEd’s spending plan by about 25 percent and cut Ameren’s request by 75 percent. Citizens Utility Board spokesman Jim Chilsen told the Illinois Radio Network that both utilities were required to refile a grid plan earlier this year after the ICC gave a thumbs down to the utilities’ initial proposals in 2023.
ComEd is Illinois’ largest electric utility, serving about 3.8 million customers across the state, and Ameren Illinois serves about 1.2 million electric customers in the state, including Aledo and most other areas in Mercer County.
