At first glance, it looked like the sheep was lounging in a beanbag chair. But at the 2025 Rock Island County Fair, that relaxed position is all part of the plan — at least if you’re in Elizabeth Bohnsack’s corner of the barn.
While many exhibitors use stands to prep their animals, Elizabeth takes a more laid-back approach. “We just lay them down, and they’re fine with it,” she explained, smiling beside a sheep calmly sitting on its rear. “Especially when it’s hot, they don’t want to fight it. It works better for us — we wash their bellies first, shear them, and they’re good to go.”
Elizabeth, who’s been showing since she was about eight years old, is a seasoned competitor. This year, she’s entered in showmanship, market ewe, market wether, and pairs — and her years of experience show in the calm confidence she brings to the barn.
“The weather’s been a little cooler this year, which is a nice change,” she said. “We’ve been working with the animals for a while, and we’re excited to show today.”
And after watching just how comfortable her sheep looked, one thing was clear: Elizabeth’s approach might just be the most relaxing seat at the fair.
