ALEDO, IL – Just three short blocks from the hustle and bustle of Rhubarb Fest, a quieter—but no less delicious—tradition is thriving in the basement of the United Methodist Church. It’s here that Ruth Dulaney helps keep everything running smoothly…or at least as smoothly as possible.
“I think we’re on Plan F so far today,” she laughed. “Things happen, but it’s all working very smoothly.”
Indeed, the church basement is full of smiling faces, enjoying hearty meals and a dazzling array of homemade pies. From sugar-free and gluten-free options to every imaginable twist on rhubarb, it’s a feast for every palate.
“We’ve got such a wide variety—just plain fruit pies, rhubarb combinations, and more,” said Delaney. “And the price is very reasonable, so everyone can enjoy a slice, or a full meal, and sit down in the air conditioning with family and friends.”
And if you ask longtime local Mary Flint, she’ll tell you: these are the best pies in Aledo. Ruth Duulaney couldn’t agree more.
“You bet,” she said uwith a smile. “I was there when they were baked, so I know they’re good.”
Located just north of the festival action, the church has become a must-stop for pie lovers and families looking to take a break from the summer heat. And thanks to Ruth and her dedicated team, the tradition is in good hands.
