Illini West outscored Mercer County 19-3 in the third quarter in a 51-33 win in girls basketball on Monday.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-5 lead at the midway point of the first quarter, but had the lead cut to 13-11 at the end of the opening period. In total, the Chargers scored 11 unanswered points across parts of the first and second quarters to take their first lead of the night at 16-13. Mercer County responded with a 5-0 run to retake an 18-16 lead, before Illini West outscored the Golden Eagles 7-2 to close the second quarter and take a 23-20 lead at halftime.
The Chargers (7-10) put the game away with a dominant third quarter.
Kennedy Gunning scored a game-high 19 points for Illini West in the win. Myah Shutwell added 12 off the bench.
Mercer County (16-4) was forced into 22 turnovers in the loss, including 18 combined in the second and third quarters. Shadia Williams led the Golden Eagles with 12 points.
Mercer County has lost three of its last four games after starting the season 15-1.
