Playing without its head coach and an assistant, Riverdale punched its ticket to the IHSA Volleyball State Finals with a three-set win over Chicago Christian in the 2A Mendota Super-Sectional on Monday.
The Rams took the match 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, to advance to the state finals for the first time since 2013, and the second time in program history.
Freshman coach Gracie Baldwin led the Rams to the win after Mitton and another coach were ejected from Thursday’s sectional championship win. Per IHSA rules, they were forced to miss the next game. Both coaches will return to the sidelines at the state finals.
The Rams (26-10-1) will play Bloomington Central Catholic (36-5) in the state semifinals at CEFCU Center on the campus of Illinois State University on Friday afternoon.
