At the 2025 Mercer County Fair, it’s not just ribbons that matter—it’s the hard work behind them. Levi Schurr, a dedicated young livestock exhibitor, is putting in the hours, setting the example, and earning respect far beyond the show ring.
Levi recently competed with his AOB Heifer and Commercial Steer, placing second in class with both heifers and third with his steer. While he admitted to feeling a little disappointed, his outlook reflects maturity and sportsmanship: “Everybody always wants better, but you just have to be thankful for what you get and keep going,” he said.
His day-to-day routine shows just how much effort goes into each moment in the ring. “Five to six hours a day—rinsing, blowing, drying calves, working hair,” Levi shared. “But once you get in that ring, it’s all up to the calf and how they want to act.”
The community has taken notice. Levi has received multiple nominations for the CBI Bank & Trust WRMJ Farm Strong Award, recognizing not only his dedication but his willingness to mentor others. “I don’t ask to be recognized,” he said. “I just do it to try and better the youth…I want to be that role model.”
Levi emphasized the need to bring more kids into livestock and ag programs like 4-H and FFA, noting a noticeable drop in participation. “When my brother was showing, the barn was full,” he said. “We need to get more people involved. The impact that 4-H and FFA have on youth—it’s unmatched.”
With his work ethic, leadership, and heart, Levi Schurr is a shining example of what makes the Mercer County Fair and its young exhibitors something to celebrate.
