Aledo will mark Memorial Day with more than its traditional parade and ceremony this year—it will also celebrate the preservation of one of its most meaningful landmarks.
At 10 a.m., Monday, just ahead of the city’s 10:45 parade and 11 a.m. ceremony, a brief dedication will be held at Monument Park to unveil new interpretive storyboards that share the rich history of Aledo’s Soldier and Sailor Monument. The panels, which represent years of quiet, determined work, were developed by the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.
Mayor Chris Hagloch says the revitalization effort reflects the steady commitment of volunteers and city leaders alike.
“The Historic Preservation Commission took this on about four or five years ago,” Hagloch said. “Through the city and budgeting and funding, they gradually brought Monument Park back to life. We now have a handicapped-accessible sidewalk that goes all the way around, and the Soldier and Sailor Monument itself has been beautifully refurbished.”
Despite limited funding—typically only $5,000 to $10,000 per year—the commission tackled the project piece by piece.
“Projects aren’t cheap, but they did what they could with what they had, and they’ve done a fabulous job,” Hagloch said.
The public is encouraged to arrive early on Monday to view the newly installed panels and take part in the dedication, which honors not only the monument’s historical significance but also the spirit of community collaboration behind its restoration.
