KEITHSBURG, Illinois – For half a century, Sharon Reason has been a constant in the city of Keithsburg. Through floods, festivals, fundraisers, and family milestones, Reason has dedicated her life to the people of her hometown. Now, as she steps away from her long-running role as mayor, she’s taking a rare moment to reflect on the journey.
In a special edition of WRMJ’s Focus, Sharon joined us in studio to share memories, wisdom, and yes—even a little teapot trivia.
“I’ve been involved with the city since the mid-70s,” Reason said. “And in all these years, Keithsburg has never left my heart. Even when I go home at night, I still worry about the town and want the best for it.”
The Flood That Changed Everything
One of the most defining moments of Reason’s tenure was the Great Flood of 1993. It devastated Keithsburg, washing away homes, businesses, and community staples. But even amid the destruction, Reason found light.
“I remember walking up to a house where volunteers were helping out, and a man introduced himself as Noah,” she recalled with a smile. “I thought, how fitting—God sent us Noah during the flood.”
A Lifelong Advocate for Keithsburg
Whether it was operating the historic Keithsburg Hotel, building a new 15-unit motel with her husband after the flood, or encouraging the next generation of small-town entrepreneurs, Reason has never stopped cheering for her city.
“There were 67 businesses here at one time,” she said. “We had a Tastee Freez that kids loved, and even dry cleaning drop-offs at Larry Rade’s old printing shop.”
She also believes Keithsburg’s future lies in tourism, outdoor recreation, and family-centered destinations. From kayaking to bait shops, she sees opportunity in the town’s natural charm.
A Passion for Teapots and History
Beyond her public service, Sharon is well known for another passion—teapots. What began as a thoughtful gift from her mother-in-law blossomed into a collection of more than 300 unique pots, many of which once filled the Keithsburg Museum.
“Each one has its own story,” she said. “We used to have tea together. It became a part of who I am.”
She’s now planning to return to the museum as a volunteer—possibly bringing her teapots back for others to enjoy.
Not Quite Retired
Though she’s no longer mayor, Sharon’s public service isn’t over. She’s now the township supervisor and still actively involved in community efforts.
“I needed something to do,” she laughed. “I guess I’m retired from city government, but I don’t know if I’ll ever fully be retired.”
A Legacy of Leadership
Keithsburg’s new mayor, Dale Parker, was sworn in this week. Sharon hopes the city’s leadership continues to push for revitalization and tourism, and to bring back the spirit of the 1980s—an era she remembers as vibrant and full of community pride.
As she looks ahead, Sharon Reason’s legacy is already written in the stories, structures, and spirit of Keithsburg.
“I just want to keep giving back,” she said. “Because this community has given me everything.”
