Two MERCO Relays, Rockridge’s Frere & Zarlatanes Advance To Boys Track Finals Saturday

Mercer County and Rockridge will both have representation in two events in the finals of the IHSA Class 1A Boys State Track and Field Finals in Charleston Saturday.

The Golden Eagles had two relays qualify for the finals Thursday. Mercer County’s 4×400-meter relay team of John Baldwin, Carlos Pollock, Trae Clark, and William Fredrickson ran a time of 3:27.33 to finish third in the preliminary round. Morrison ran the best time Thursday, 3:24.62.

Mercer County’s 4×800-meter relay team of Clark, Pollock, Mason Coulter, and Corbin Sturgill finished 11th in the prelims with a time of 8:23.07 Thursday. Newman ran the best time in the 4×800-meter prelims, 8:02.67.

Rockridge’s Vaughn Frere advanced to the finals Saturday in the shotput and discus. In the discus, Frere threw 15.55 meters, which is good for seventh place through the prelims. Graham Meister of Dwight is in first place entering Saturday at 17.01 meters. Frere, along with teammate Alex Zarlatanes, will both be a part of the discus finals. Zarlatanes is in fourth place after a throw of 47.66 meters. Frere finished 11th in the prelim round at 43.60 meters. Hank Alvey of Illini Bluffs is leading in the discus with his best throw of 49.04 meters.
