Sherrard Claims Third Straight Sectional Title, Sends 10 Events To State Meet

The Sherrard Tigers cruised to their third consecutive IHSA Class 1A Sectional championship in girls track and field in Erie Wednesday. Sherrard scored 113 points, finishing 51 points ahead of second-place St. Bede.

The Tigers qualified for the IHSA State Track and Field Meet in 10 events. Sectional champions for Sherrard included Lillian Russell in the 100-meters and 200-meters, the 4×400-meter relay (Cami Anderson, Beth Churchill, Sarah Neal, Kelsey Hutchins) and 4×800-meter relay (Churchill, Madisyn Skelly, Jocelyn Skelley, Madison Mathis), and Hutchins in the triple jump. Hutchins set a new Sherrard record in the event (11.55 m).

Russell also qualified for state in the 200-meters with a second-place finish. The Tigers finished second to qualify in the 4×100-meter relay (Anderson, Russell, Neal, Hutchins) and beat the qualifying time in the 4×200-meter relay (Anderson, Neal, Hutchins, Savannah Hickson).

Anderson will head to state in the high jump after coming in second. As will pole vaulter Aliza Dominque, who cleared the qualifying height.

Rockridge will be represented in two events in Charleston. Teresa Harris qualified in the triple jump and the Rockets’ 4×400-meter (Harris, Leah DeCook, Brinley Dunnett, Keaten Needham) relay team is headed to state, too.
