Wendell Keith Harroun, 96 of Aledo, died Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Brookstone of Aledo. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial with Military Honors will be in Aledo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County VFW or the Aledo United Methodist Church.
Wendell was born on September 20, 1927, in Duncan Township, Mercer County, Illinois, to J. Keith and Vesta Irene (Gorman) Harroun. He served his country in World War II and Korea while a member of the United States Navy. He married Gloria Jean Flynn on December 13, 1952, in Keithsburg, Illinois. She preceded him in death on February 8, 2015.
Wendell farmed and worked for John Deere Plow and Planter Works. He was a lifetime member of the Mercer County VFW, enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, and, in later years, listening to audio books. He enjoyed reminiscing and the social hours with the other residents at Brookstone. Wendell adored his grandchildren and especially his great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish Wendell’s memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Ted Long of Aledo; grandchildren: Eric and Daphney Long and their children, Adler, Vera, and Fenton and Kristin and Nathan Willits and daughter, Violet; and brother and sister-in-law, Fay and Rochelle Harroun of Mississippi. Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Deborah Craig; and sisters, Doris Tindal and Shirley Bateman.
