ALEDO, IL – The fight against cancer takes center stage once again as WRMJ teams up with the Mercer County Relay for Life for the 11th annual Relay for Life Radiothon, set for Monday, April 28th from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s edition promises even more energy, stories of hope, and heartfelt community support—all from the sidewalk in front of the WRMJ studios in downtown Aledo.
Among those leading the charge is Mary Flint, an eight-year cancer survivor and longtime advocate for the American Cancer Society. “Every time I go in for my checkup, even though I feel great, there’s still that little bit of apprehension,” said Flint during a special Focus interview on WRMJ. “But I got a really good report this year—eight years cancer-free.”
Flint’s passion for Relay began long before her own diagnosis. In 2014, she helped organize the first local Radiothon, which raised just under $2,000 with 28 callers. Fast-forward to 2024, the event saw 98 callers, dozens more who stopped by the station, and an incredible $11,091 raised. This year’s goal? $12,000.
“Every dollar makes a difference,” says Flint. “Yes, some funds go to cancer research, but a lot of it directly supports people in Mercer County—rides to treatment, access to Hope Lodge in Iowa City or Mayo, support hotlines, and help for caregivers. It’s real, it’s local, and it saves lives.”
The 2025 Radiothon will feature live interviews every 15 to 20 minutes with cancer survivors, caregivers, team members, and supporters—all sharing their personal stories. Live music from local artists Jason Parchert and Ryan Koresko, both with ties to the cause, will add to the uplifting atmosphere, and Ferg’s Public House is even lending chairs to create a front-row sidewalk concert feel.
Community support is already building. Spanky’s Meat Wagon plans to set up outside WRMJ that day, donating 20% of proceeds plus all tips to Relay. Pledge buckets will also be available at New Windsor Depot and Rocky’s in New Boston for those who can’t make it to the station but still want to help.
Listeners can call in, stop by in person (even from their cars), or walk right up to the table to make a donation. Pledges can be made in honor of a current fighter or in memory of someone lost to cancer—and WRMJ will announce those dedications on the air if requested. All donors will be entered into a prize drawing featuring comedy tickets and more.
“We don’t want anyone to hear the words ‘you have cancer’ without knowing their community is right there behind them,” said Flint. “We hope you’ll listen in, feel moved, and give what you can. It all matters.”
