Portia A. Carle, 81 of New Boston, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024, at UPH-Trinity, Muscatine. A private burial will take place at Eliza Creek Cemetery, next to her son, Lance, at a later date. Memorials may be left to the family. Portia was born on August 16, 1943, in Muscatine, the daughter of Vaughn and Helen (Downey) Powell. She married Gary Shepard and had two children together, and later separated. On January 14, 1983, she married Robert “Bob” Carle in Keithsburg, IL. She retired from the Button Factory. Portia enjoyed living in the country, taking care of her flower garden, horses, and watching birds, especially cardinals. She had a sweet tooth, enjoying her Reese’s peanut butter cups and chocolate ice cream. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her loving companion (dog), Annie Mae. Anyone who knew Portia, knew how sassy and outspoken she was.
Portia is survived by her daughter, Amanda Shepard; daughter-in-law, Trudi Shepard; grandchildren, Stormi Stumbo, Zack (Bree) Stumbo, Becca (Dale) Turner, Caitlin (Brad) Hruby, Blake Shepard, Dylan Shepard, and Adriana Stumbo; 11 great grandchildren; step-son, Mike Carle; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Lance Shepard; siblings, Vaughn “Windy” Powell, Helen Berry, and Sandra Spray; and step-children, Randy Carle and Cindy Bjortvedt.
