Mercer County picked up its first-ever softball win over Sherrard by a final score of 5-3 on Monday.
The Golden Eagles (6-6, 2-3 TRAC West) opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, with a two-RBI single by Elsie Cook and an RBI double by Alivia Gillespie. Mercer County extended its lead to 4-0 with a Natalie Thomson RBI single in the fourth inning and pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth on a solo home run by Gillespie.
Trailing 5-0 entering the top of the seventh, Sherrard’s (7-6, 2-3 TRAC West) first five batters reached base safely, including RBI hits from Ava Stanley, Marisa Neels and Alexis Essary to cut the deficit to 5-3 with nobody out.
Mercer County brought Gillespie, who recorded the final three outs of the game in order, and stranded the runners on second and third.
Cook was the winning pitcher for Mercer County, allowing three runs in six innings.
Makensie Westfall took the loss for Sherrard, giving up five runs over six innings.
Sherrard had 14 hits in the loss, but stranded 12 runners on base.
