The seeds are in the ground and summer is just around the corner. Mercer County Farm Bureau Manager Jenna Preston joined Terry James on WRMJ’s Focus to talk about a variety of ag-related events and initiatives taking place in the area.
The long-running ACE Camp recently celebrated its 29th year, welcoming nearly 200 second graders to the Mercer County Fairgrounds. Students from all county schools participated in a hands-on learning experience focused on agriculture, conservation, and the environment. “Some of our volunteers have been with us since the first year,” said Preston. “It’s really special.”
Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of ACE Camp, and volunteers are always welcome. Those interested in helping with ACE Camp or the Ag in the Classroom program can reach out to the Farm Bureau office.
Looking ahead, several exciting events are on the summer calendar. The next Mobile Food Pantry will be held this Saturday at the Mercer County Food Pantry parking lot, starting at 10 a.m. Farm in the Park will take place Friday, June 13th, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in Central Park, Aledo. Attractions include the Butterfly Bus, petting zoo, bounce houses, and even a weather-themed experience with the “Beast” from Channel 8.
Also returning is the Young Leaders Bags Tournament, happening June 26th at Bo’s LongBranch in Reynolds. Proceeds will go toward purchasing a pedal tractor pull set. The entry fee is $25 per team if registered before June 19th.
And speaking of tractor pulls, the Kiddie Tractor Pull returns to the Mercer County Fair on July 9th, and again at the Rock Island County Fair on July 16th. “I don’t know who enjoys it more—our Young Leaders or the kids,” laughed Preston.
