Aledo, IL – The basement at First Baptist Church of Aledo is buzzing with activity this week as volunteers and youth prepare for the return of the church’s popular Free Basement Sale, happening Friday, May 30, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, May 31, from 8 to 11 a.m.
The community is invited to browse and take home a wide variety of donated items—from clothes and toys to home goods and furniture—completely free of charge. “Anybody can come in and grab items and take them home,” says Youth Pastor Austin Shields. “Even if you don’t need anything, come take a look. We’ve got a lot to give away.”
What started as a way for church families to clean out garages and share extra household items has grown into an event focused on generosity and connection. “There’s a lot in our community who need things. This is our way of serving and helping them out,” Shields said.
This year’s event also includes a suggested donation opportunity, with funds going toward the Refuge Student Ministry’s upcoming mission trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, part of the national “Week of Hope” initiative. Six local students will be heading to Ohio in mid-June to serve alongside ministries and nonprofits.
“Anything you can give is awesome,” Shields adds. “But if you can’t, no worries—everything is still completely free.”
The event will also include large furniture items displayed outside during sale hours—tables, chairs, and more.
