Melvin Henry Short – Services 9/25/25

Melvin Henry Short, 93 of New Boston, Illinois, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday, September 25, at the Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo, Illinois. The funeral service will directly follow at 12 p.m. Interment will be at the Eliza Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be left to the Eliza Creek Community Center. Melvin was born on October 1, 1931, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of William and Anais Whitaker Short. After high school, he proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. He later married Beverly Muhlenburg on November 7, 1953, in Joy, Illinois.

Melvin farmed in the local area most of his life. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and tinkering with various objects to make ornaments and collectibles. He also served on the Eliza Township Board for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Beverly Short of New Boston; children, Vickie Hall of Coal Valley, Randy (Laura) Short of Oquawka, and Cindy (Dennis) Short-Nelson of Joy; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Delores Willets of Oquawka; and many more family and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debbie DeBacker; grandson, Andrew DeBacker; and son-in-law, Jim Hall.
