Joyce was born January 1, 1933, in New Windsor, Illinois, to Clarence and Louise Doss Mizner. She graduated from Aledo High School in 1951. She married Frederick Kernan July 20, 1952, in Aledo. She was born again on November 25, 1996, at Antioch Baptist Church.

Joyce was employed at Service Rubber in Rock Island. She and her sister, Annie, owned and operated K & K Upholstery Shop in Buffalo Prairie and Joy for 35 years.

As a member of Antioch Baptist Church she was very active in her service to Jesus, her Lord. She taught Sunday School to children so that they could learn more about Jesus and also served in many other ways through her lifetime. She enjoyed sewing and especially being with her family and following all the many activities in which they were involved. Letting her family, especially her grandchildren, know about the importance of faith in Jesus was essential not only in this life, but so they would all be together again.

Survivors include a daughter, Cookie (Tom) Hofmann of Aledo, and a son, Blaine Kernan of Milan; eight grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mickey Lawson of Geneseo and Myrtle McWhorter of Aledo; and several nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in her departure to Heaven by her parents; stepfather; her husband, Fred; one daughter, Deanna “Missy” Kernan; one sister, Annie Kiddoo; and two brothers, Clarence “Heavy” and Alvin “Brickey” Mizner.
