IHSA Awards Orion Girls Sectional Track Title

Official statement from IHSA regarding last Thursday’s Orion 1A girls track sectional.

“The IHSA Girls Track & Field Sectional hosted by Orion High School on May 11 was incorrectly scored on the meet software by scoring eight places per event, when only six places per event should have been scored. Mercer County High School was the champion in the eight-place scoring format, while the correct six-place scoring recognized Orion as the winner. The error was discovered by Orion meet management after the meet’s completion. The IHSA Terms & Conditions allow for scoring and clerical errors to be corrected if discovered within 48 hours of the meet’s completion. Given that this error was discovered in the appropriate timeframe, and correctable by IHSA rules, the IHSA recognizes Orion High School as the Sectional champion. It was a regrettable mistake, but certainly not done with any ill intent. We appreciate the professionalism that both schools’ have exhibited in handling the situation, and wish the best of luck to all the student-athletes from both schools competing in the state finals this weekend.”
