A Sherrard man’s federal weapons case has been continued to this fall. 28 year old Donovan Smith will return to U.S. District Court in Rock Island on November 14th. He faces two counts of unlawful transport of firearms. Smith was involved in a June 12th incident in the Viola area and was shot during a drugs and weapons investigation by a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy. He was originally charged at the state level, but those charges were dismissed so the federal case could proceed against him. Two Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputies were cleared in the shooting. Another suspect involved in the case is still charged at the state level. 29 year old Alex Cady of Preemption faces a Class X felony of armed violence, Class 2 felony of possession of a stolen firearm, and two Class 3 felonies of felon in possession of a weapon. He will return to Mercer County Circuit Court on October 1. Cady remains in custody at the Mercer County Jail on $500,000 bond and Smith is in custody with the U.S. Marshals Service.
