(Aledo, IL) – The Churches of Mercer County Food Pantry continues to be a vital resource for local residents, and its leaders are thanking the community for its generosity.
Treasurer Lori Benson says they were concerned about meeting their $60,000 annual budget but received over $25,000 in donations in December alone.
Vice President Darla Phelps notes that monetary donations go further, as the pantry can purchase food at lower prices through Riverbend Food Bank. Donations can be made in-person, by mail, or through PayPal at mercofoodpantry.org.
Krissy Dixon, corresponding secretary, says demand has increased due to recent layoffs, and the pantry is in need of food and toiletry donations. High-demand items include cereal, packaged potatoes, tuna, chili beans, pork and beans, and canned fruits. Donations can be dropped off Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon, with other arrangements available upon request.
The pantry also accepts fresh produce, eggs, and meat (if processed at a licensed facility). Additionally, pop and beer cans can be donated at the collection bin at Aledo Veterinary Clinic.
The first Mobile Food Pantry of the year is set for Saturday, March 15, at First Baptist Church in partnership with Mercer County Farm Bureau and Community Bible Fellowship Church. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m., with distribution at 10 a.m.
Benson encourages the public to consider volunteering, especially during the spring and summer months. Opportunities are listed on their website.
This year marks 15 years at the pantry’s current location and 35 years of service for Coordinator Sharon Lingafelter. A celebration is in the works.
