Bump To 2A No Problem For Sherrard Girls Track, Tigers Win 4th Consecutive Sectional

The Sherrard girls track and field team won its fourth straight sectional championship Thursday, finishing 0.5 points ahead of Geneseo at the IHSA 2A Princeton Sectional.

The Tigers scored 123.5 points to beat Geneseo, who took second place with 123 points. Galesburg finished third at the sectional with 102 points, while Princeton and LaSalle-Peru scored 52 points to tie for fourth.

Sherrard is sending 11 events to the IHSA State Finals. The Tigers had four sectional champions – Aliza Dominique in the pole vault, the 4×200 meter relay team (Anderson, McKenzie Locke, Sarah Neal, Dominique), the 4×400 meter relay team (Anderson, Beth Churchill, Evelyn Weakley, Dominique), the 4×800 meter relay team (Madison Mathis, Anna Churchill, Beth Churchill, Weakley).

Other state qualifiers for the Tigers include Lillian Russell (100-meters & 200-meters), Beth Churchill (800-meters), Tori Browning (3200-meters), Sadie Shemek (discus), and Cami Anderson (high jump), and the 4×100 meter relay team (Anderson, Dominique, Kelsey Doonan, Russell).

At the 1A Wethersfield Sectional, Mercer County took third place and Rockridge finished tied for eighth.

The Golden Eagles are sending six events to the IHSA State Finals. Molly Hofmann took first place in both the 100-meter hurdles and jump.  The other state qualifiers for Mercer County are Paige Davis (100-meter hurdles), Kyla Blaser (triple jump), Grace Gillespie (pole vault), and Alayna Mitchell (300-meter hurdles).

Rockridge has three events headed to the state meet. Teresa Harris was the sectional champion in the triple jump. Kylie Meyer (pole vault) and Keaten Needham (long jump) are also headed to the IHSA State Finals.
