Area wrestlers had a good first day at the Class 1A State Championships at the State Farm Center in Champaign. Rockridge’s Dallas Krueger at 126, Mercer County’s Stone Engle at 132, Rockridge’s Nolan Throne at 138, Orion’s James Schnerre at 152, Mercer County’s Steve Speaker Jr. at 170, Rockridge’s Collin Schmidt at 195, and Orion’s Logan Lee at 285. Orion’s Trent Scharpman lost at 145. Quarterfinals and wrestlebacks begin at 8:30 am.
In a make up game, Fulton beat Orion 55-44 in TRAC play.
At the Hinckley Class 1A Sectional championship game, Annawan held off Newark 52-45. At the Farmington Class 2A Sectional championship game, Eureka beat Midwest Central 64-62. Sherrard’s Callie Minch and Mercer County’s Emma Coulter advanced to state in the Country Financial 3-point Showdown.
