ALEDO, Ill. – It’s that time again — the day each month when we shine a spotlight on one of our region’s hardworking farmers with the Farm Strong Award, brought to you by CBI Bank & Trust and Farm Country 102.3 WRMJ.
For August, we’re proud to honor Bill Hessman, a familiar and respected name in the Mercer County ag community.
Terry James from WRMJ caught up with Bill on his farm, where he was surprised with the award and a $100 cash prize from CBI Bank & Trust.
“I’m exhilarated. I had no idea,” Bill said, holding up his winnings with a big smile.
At 85 years young, Bill has been farming since 1960, operating a 650-acre grain farm, maintaining a cow/calf herd, and, for many years, raising registered quarter horses. He’s been a longtime supporter of the New Windsor Fair, Rodeo, and Horse Show often showing his horses at the event. He also served as a coach for youth in competition.
“I enjoyed being with young people and helping them,” he said. His guidance and leadership have helped shape future generations of ag leaders.
When asked if he had anything else to share, Bill offered a heartfelt message: “Just have faith in God.”
Each month, CBI Bank & Trust and WRMJ recognize a local farmer who exemplifies strength, perseverance, and community spirit. This month, that honor goes to Bill Hessman — a man who truly embodies what it means to be Farm Strong.
