A Moline man has entered the race for state representative in Illinois’s 71st congressional district.

Kermit Thomas announced he’s running as a Democrat this week. He’s the second Democrat to announce their candidacy, joining 2021 Sherrard High School graduate Veronica Sparksman.

Thomas is an Army Veteran and is vice president of the Rock Island County NAACP chapter. He’s also served as a pastor at the Church of Christ in Davenport since 2019.

State Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) currently holds the seat. He announced his reelection campaign last month.

Illinois’ 71st congressional district includes Sherrard, New Windsor, and Alexis in Mercer County.
