ALEDO, IL – The Mercer County Health Department is organizing a hygiene drive to support students at Mercer County High School, with donations accepted now through May 23rd.
The drive was created in response to concerns from students about the lack of access to basic hygiene products. Items like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, and dental care supplies are not always available at school and, when they are, the quality is often low or supplies run out quickly.
Carissa Whitmire, a sophomore from Aledo, and Emma Shaw, a freshman from Keithsburg, both expressed how much of a difference the donated items could make. They noted that many students don’t have reliable access to these products at home either, and they’re encouraging the community to help out.
The Health Department and school staff say the issue came into focus after a student survey identified hygiene as the top concern among students.
Melissa Hajostek, the school’s nurse navigator, said the drive is about improving daily life for students. “We all know these are the kinds of items we rely on every day,” she said. “It’s about helping students feel more comfortable, healthy, and confident.”
Janice Daniels with the Health Department added that it’s surprising how many students are going without these essentials. “It shows that the needs in our community may be deeper than we realize. Even the students are seeing it,” she said.

Shampoo & Conditioner
Soap & Body Wash
Toothpaste & Toothbrushes
Mouthwash & Dental Floss
Combs & Brushes
Feminine hygiene products
Deodorant
Waterless shampoo and body wash for students who may not have regular access to running water
Monetary donations are also accepted and can be dropped off or sent to the Mercer County Health Department, which will use the funds to purchase high-need or bulk items.
