Mercer County Sheriff Dusty Terrill has publicly endorsed the upcoming $28 million bond referendum aimed at renovating and expanding Mercer County High School. The proposal, set for a vote on April 1, 2025, seeks to fund critical upgrades without increasing the current school tax rate.
Sheriff Terrill emphasized that his support stems from the project’s focus on enhancing student safety and security. He noted that while the school district prioritizes security, the aging infrastructure limits effective measures. The proposed renovations aim to address these concerns comprehensively.
Planned safety improvements include:
- A redesigned public entry with clear lines of sight.
- Elimination of unlocked exterior doors during student transitions.
- Installation of advanced door security systems.
- Upgraded camera surveillance.
- Modernized fire alarm systems.
Sheriff Terrill stressed the urgency of these upgrades, pointing out that delays could lead to increased costs. He urged community members to vote in favor of the referendum, highlighting the importance of providing a safe and secure learning environment for future generations.
The bond is structured over a 30-year period and is designed to be a zero school tax rate increase.
If approved, construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2026.
