Viola is ready to spread holiday cheer with the return of its Christmas in the Village event on Saturday, December 7th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. With festive activities, new attractions, and a lighted parade, the day promises something for everyone.
“Christmas in the Village is a great time for us to show off Viola and welcome visitors to our community,” said Jim Morrison of the Viola Community Club. “With new businesses like Gaining Ground Fitness and Prairie Crossroads Mercantile, we’re excited to see more people come into town and join the fun.”
Returning favorites include the Viola Library’s Christmas Store from 9 to 11 a.m. and the Sherrard All-School Senate’s Biscuit and Gravy Breakfast, served at the Community Center from 7 to 11 a.m. Proceeds from the breakfast will support student initiatives.
“The breakfast is always a hit,” Morrison shared. “It’s a great way to start the day and support a good cause.”
A cookie sale at the Village Hall will benefit Sherrard High School’s Operation Santa, with half of the proceeds going to the program. For those looking for something new, this year introduces horse and wagon rides.
“This is the first time we’ve had the wagon rides,” Morrison explained. “It’s a 20-minute route that starts behind the fire station, winds through Hickory Hills, and back. It’s a fun way to experience the village during the holidays.”
Adding to the excitement is the first-ever fun run, a three-mile route beginning at 8 a.m., escorted by the Viola Fire Department. “We’ve had a lot of interest in the run,” said Morrison. “It’s something new, and we’re excited to see how it goes.”
A scavenger hunt will also be held, featuring local businesses such as Gaining Ground Fitness, Viola Telephone Company, Dennison Funeral Home, and Slagle Creations. For those looking to take a break, City Limits will offer lunch specials and Bloody Marys.
A Craft Show and food will be featured at the Viola United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The Craft Show will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be Chili and Chicken Noodle Soup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entrance will be through the south door of the church, through the Sanctuary, which will also be on display.
The festivities conclude with the annual lighted parade, sponsored by the Viola Fire Department, at 5 p.m. Lineup begins at the Methodist Church, and the parade will feature decorated vehicles, fire trucks, and more.
“We encourage everyone to get involved,” Morrison said. “Whether it’s a golf cart, car, or truck, decorate it and join the parade. It’s always a highlight of the day.”
Stephanie Brown, who has been involved with Christmas in the Village for the past few years, said the event is a testament to the community’s spirit. “It’s amazing to see how much work everyone puts in,” she said. “The whole town comes together to make it special.”
Brown, dressed as “Buddy the Elf” to promote the event, added, “This is one of my favorite times of the year. I love seeing everyone come out to celebrate and connect.”
Viola invites everyone to be part of this festive day. Whether enjoying horse-drawn wagon rides, indulging in treats, or participating in the scavenger hunt, Christmas in the Village is a perfect way to kick off the holiday season.
