An effort underway to rename Matherville Road in honor of two local soldiers killed in action during World War II. William Kouske and Freemon Sandquist were both Purple Heart recipients. Kouske died in the Battle of the Bulge and Sandquist was killed in France and is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery. As a boy, Kevin Basala delivered the newspaper to their families. He says the road renaming serves as a perfect tribute.
Basala is a former Mercer County Board Chairman.
