Former Mercer County head baseball coach Nick Basala is being recommended for the Sherrard High School head baseball job. The hire is on Wednesday night’s Unit 200 Board of Education agenda. Basala is a Sherrard grad and coached for nine seasons at Mercer County, resigning following the 2018 season. His tenure included Lincoln Trail Conference titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well as IHSA regional titles in 2013, 2016 and 2017 and a sectional final appearance in 2017. He also coaches the Milan Legion team. Basala had been hired as a Sherrard assistant for last season, but IHSA baseball was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Brandon Oelmann resigned as Sherrard head baseball coach last month. He took over the program in 2016.
Also this week, Joe Lopez is being recommended for the Sherrard boys track job. He coached the Tigers cross country program last fall, replacing Ryan Buchanan, who he assisted the three previous seasons. Buchanan is now at Assumption.
