Illinois 4-H challenges youth to try new things, experiment in project areas that interest them, and explore opportunities around the state and country. The 4-H Experience Award recognizes youth who excel in that challenge. The award is sponsored by the Illinois 4-H Foundation. “We celebrate youth whose 4-H experiences have expanded outside their home county to the state, national, or international level,” said Lisa Diaz, University of Illinois Extension assistant dean and Illinois 4-H director.
Youth earning the two highest levels, diamond and emerald, are recognized at the state level. The individual winners in each category include Mariah Conaway of North Henderson, who received an EMERALD LEVEL LEADERSHIP AWARD. Mariah has proven herself as a leader in her club and community. She is active in the Saddle Teens 4-H Club where she serves as President, was a Junior Leader and is on the Community Service Club committee. She is a member of the Mercer County Teen Federation and is a 4-H Teen Teacher, helping to lead Monarchs on the Move and Ag in the Classroom curriculum. She also participated in the Ignite Youth State 4-H Conference. She has given her time in volunteer service in the community including at the Tiger’s Closet, for residents at the Marigold Village Nursing home, and was a counselor to at risk youth at Camp Summit. In addition to her Emerald Award, Mariah also received President’s Volunteer Service Award in November in recognition of her service.
