Sherrard Man Shot During Drugs & Weapons Investigation Now Facing Federal Charges

State charges have been dismissed against a Sherrard man shot by a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy in June. But 28 year old Donovan Smith is now being charged federally with two counts of unlawful transport of firearms. He was involved in a June 12th incident in the Viola area and was shot during a drugs and weapons investigation. Smith remains in custody at the Mercer County Jail and will appear in federal court on September 19th. Another suspect in the case is still charged at the state level. 29 year old Alex Cady of Preemption faces a Class X felony of armed violence, Class 2 felony of possession of a stolen firearm, and two Class 3 felonies of felon in possession of a weapon. Cady  remains in custody at the Mercer County Jail on $500,000 bond and is due in court August 13th for a 402 conference, which is a closed door meeting with the defense, state and judge to discuss a possible agreement in the case.
