A Sherrard High School senior is making history by being accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Ava Egel is the first female student in Sherrard High School history to be accepted into West Point and just the second student in the school’s history to earn the honor.
Egel was notified of her acceptance by U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen last week. As part of the process, applicants must receive a nomination from a U.S. Senator or Representative. Sorensen provided a recommendation for Egel.
Egel will report to West Point in June, where she will complete Cadet Basic Training. She attended the academy’s Summer Leadership Experience over the summer, which gives students a firsthand look at cadet life.
According to U.S. News, the acceptance rate into the United States Military Academy at West Point is just 12%.
Egel joins 1986 Sherrard High School graduate Lieutenant General Steven Gilland, who currently serves as superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, as the only other Sherrard student to be accepted into the academy.
Egel spoke with WRMJ about the honor on Monday.
