Sherrard went on to win its first boys basketball regional title since 2006 with a 75-64 win over Orion on Feb. 28. The Tigers advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 29 years following a 65-63 overtime win against Tri-Valley in the sectional semifinal on March 5. Sherrard’s season ended in the sectional final, falling to Manual 62-49 on March 7.

Sherrard was the only Class 2A team to beat state champion Dyett this season.

In three seasons at Sherrard, Johnson has led his alma mater to a 69-23 record. In nine seasons as a varsity coach, he has compiled a record of 164-93.

Johnson was honored as a Class 2A recipient in the IBCA’s District 11.
