CAMBRIDGE, IL — It’s a full-circle moment for Tyson Schulte, who takes the stage tonight at the Henry County Fair as the opening act for country star David Nail. But for many in the crowd, the real spotlight is on Schulte himself — a proud Sherrard High School graduate with deep Mercer County roots.
“I guess you could say you get to claim me first,” Schulte laughed during an interview on Farm Country 102.3. “I grew up just on the edge of Rock Island County, but I went to Sherrard and spent plenty of time in Mercer County. This definitely feels like home.”
Schulte’s connection to the fair scene runs deep. A ten-year 4-H member and longtime FFA participant, he once served as Illinois FFA State Treasurer and Section 3 President — even helping paint fences at the Henry County Fairgrounds years ago.
Now he’s returning not just to visit — but to perform.
“There’s nothing quite like coming home,” Schulte said. “You’re playing in front of people you know. Parents of friends, folks you grew up with — it’s a different kind of nerves. But it’s also really special.”
Tonight’s acoustic performance will include songs drawn from personal experience — including one about showing livestock at the county fair and another titled Twister, inspired by the 2013 tornado that devastated Washington, Illinois.
“It’s about resilience,” he said. “I try to write songs I can speak to — stuff that means something.”
Schulte may be newer to the professional music scene, but he’s no stranger to the spotlight. His heartfelt lyrics and authentic storytelling are quickly building a loyal following. And while he’s still working with a young band, his acoustic set promises a personal, engaging experience.
“If you’re in the front row tonight, I’m talking to you,” he said with a grin. “We’re gonna have a conversation.”
