As WRMJ hosts the Relay for Life of Mercer County Radiothon , we’re spotlighting people and places making a difference in the lives of those facing cancer. One of those places is Hope Lodge in Iowa City, a facility operated by the American Cancer Society that provides free lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers during treatment.
Jenna Maxson, General Manager of the Iowa City location, joined the Radiothon to share more about the lodge’s mission and impact.
“Our Hope Lodge opened in 2008,” Maxson explained. “There are over 30 Hope Lodge locations across the U.S., all with the same mission—to provide free lodging in a safe and welcoming environment so patients can focus on healing.”
And the impact is remarkable.
“Last year, we provided over 13,000 nights of stay at no cost,” Maxson said. “That’s more than a thousand patients and caregivers. Nationwide, Hope Lodges save families over $55 million a year in lodging costs.”
More than just a place to sleep, Hope Lodge also provides emotional support and wellness programming. From support groups and chair yoga to weekly bingo and even massage therapy, patients and caregivers alike are given tools to recharge during a difficult time.
Hope Lodge is 100% donor funded, and today’s Radiothon helps support their efforts. “We can’t do anything we do without those donations,” said Maxson.
If you’re heading to Iowa City for treatment and live more than 40 miles from your provider, you may qualify for a free stay at Hope Lodge. All it takes is a referral from your doctor.
“We’re here to take the stress out of the stay,” Maxson added. “And give families one less thing to worry about.”
