The Mercer County School District hired Fred Lucas as its next head football coach Wednesday.
Lucas has been an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles for the past eight seasons and has spent eight years as a varsity coach. Lucas led Roseville-Yorkwood in 2004, Westwood from 2005-06, and United from 2012-16. He compiled an overall record of 30-46 and qualified for the playoffs four times.
Lucas replaces Tanner Matlick, who resigned in November after missing the final two games of the 2024 season while serving an indefinite suspension. In just under two full seasons at Mercer County, Matlick led the Golden Eagles to a 9-8 record in 17 games.
Mercer County went 4-5 last season.
